FDA Recognizes Medical Marijuana For Seizures
Thanks to some clinical testing, the FDA now recognizes CBD seizure treatment. This means CBD is approved to treat epilepsy. That’s groundbreaking for medical marijuana.
This is exciting news not only because it legitimizes medical cannabis. Additionally, it provides a roadmap for the future. By reviewing how this happened, we can see how future developments may take place.
FDA Recognizes Medical Marijuana: What Does The FDA Do?
We’ve written before about what the FDA does but a refresher is always good. The FDA regulates food and medicine safety in the US. It approves or disapproves claims manufacturers make based on drug efficacy. Obviously, it also governs safe food growing and handling conditions as well.
Before the FDA approves a medicine as treatment, it must see clinical testing that proves effectiveness. Until it is satisfied with such results, it will not allow any claims about a drug. This also goes for natural substances like St. Johns Wort and, until recently, CBD.
FDA Recognizes Medical Marijuana: What Is CBD?
CBD or cannabidiol is a cannabinoid. These organic substances provide protection for the plants that produce them. Cannabis and hemp both produce CBD naturally.
Although THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, they work very differently. When they enter the body, they interact in different ways with something called the Endocannabinoid System. This system contains receptors, neurotransmitters, fatty acids and enzymes that govern certain physical processes.
CBD does not bind to receptors but does influence how other substances within the endocannabinoid system behave. Read more about CBD here.
When you find medical CBD, it is hemp CBD. This substance is extracted and isolated or extracted along with other cannabinoids in hemp. There are many ways to take CBD from oral to topical.
FDA Recognizes Medical Marijuana: Clinical Research For CBD And Seizures
Epidiolex is the star of the show here. GW Pharmaceuticals tested clinically tested it on Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. These conditions are two serious and rare kinds of epilepsy.
The results speak for themselves. CBD effectively treated most of the patients studied.
After testing, GW provided results to the FDA who reviewed them. They were satisfied with what they saw and now approve this substance, but only for treatment of these two conditions.
This is great news for people with these conditions because they do not traditionally respond to other recognized treatments. CBD in the form of Epidiolex is a better option for many.
FDA Recognizes Medical Marijuana: What About Chronic Pain, Etc?
CBD Clinical testing suffered difficulty because of its legal situation. Obtaining testing approval proved difficult. Without such results, the FDA would not be swayed about chronic pain or any of the other things CBD appears to treat.
If we want to change that, we need researchers to perform these types of tests and submit their findings to the FDA. Hopefully, Congress’ decision allowing agricultural hemp will pave the way for expanding research.
For now, this is an excellent step in the right direction.
