In the early days, there was bud, hash, and kief. We’ve come a long way with cannabis concentrates, but kief is still a fan favorite.
It’s easy to use, easy to harvest, and easy to share.
Let’s pay tribute to one of the OGs. Today’s all about kief.
What Is Cannabis Concentrate
Kief is a type of cannabis concentrate, but what is cannabis concentrate in the first place? The term usually refers to a type of extract made by separating the cannabinoids and terpene rich, essential oils in cannabis from the rest of the plant. Hash, oil (BHO and PHO), wax, and shatter are all cannabis concentrates. Kief is a little different, though.
Before we get into all that, more about terpenes and cannabinoids. Most people know that cannabinoids bond to receptors in the brain that cause psychoactive effects. Terpenes act like that as well, but they’re more subtle. They give cannabis its distinctive aroma, and experts are starting to believe terpenes could be the deciding factor in the different effect of each strain.
Technically, a cannabis concentrate is any substance with a high concentration of terpenes and cannabinoids. Some concentrates undergo pressure or chemical extraction to draw out the terpenes and cannabinoids.
Kief, in particular, is a collection of tiny crystals that accumulate on the tip of the resin glands of a cannabis plant. There is a very high concentration of terpenes and cannabinoids in kief, and cannabis users have been saving it for decades.
People like kief because:
- You don’t have to process it to use it (although you can)
- There’s less plant matter combusting, so it’s a clean smoke
- You can vaporize or smoke it
- Extraction is extremely simple
Kief And Hash
Hash is a concentrated form of kief. Heat and pressure are two common ways to process kief into hash. The substance turns into a soft ball, and the more pressure, the darker the color.
Icewater or bubble hash is even cooler. Pun intended. Cannabis is stirred in a bucket of extremely cold water until the trichome glands (where the terpenes and cannabinoids reside break off the plant. The slurry is poured through a series of graduating smaller screens. The first screen sifts out all of the green plant material. The rest collect the trichomes which are a thick mud like consistency.
Dry that mud off and you get hash with up to 80% THC.
How To Use Kief
You can smoke kief in a regular pipe or water pipe, a vaporizer, or in a joint. No special equipment needed.
Some people like to vape kief all on its own. Mostly, however, smokers sprinkle some kief onto bud for an extra kick.
Before you can use it, you have to collect it. Large scale operations sift bud with screens. At home users can purchase a three chamber grinder. As you break up your bud, the crystals will fall into a special compartment.
Euphoria is just a sprinkle away.
