The good news in cannabis research continues with a look into marijuana and epilepsy. A recent study finds cannabidiol cuts the risk of some types of seizures in half.  This may bring us one step closer toward wide spread legalization. Safe access to medical grade CBD could provide relief to the nearly 50 million people who live with epilepsy.

Marijuana And Epilepsy: Lennox-Gastaut Study At Nationwide Children’s Hospital

The researchers at Nationwide administered CBD in liquid form to young patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. CBD appeared to reduce seizures in 40% of patients. The reduction was at least 50%. This is compared to the 15% of patients who got the same results but took a placebo.

This is not the only study involving marijuana and epilepsy. Research into marijuana as medicine continues. Additionally, many individual patients experience relief through taking CBD.

Considering the positive results so far, Marijuana and epilepsy may be seeing more of each other in the future as science explores new ways to treat patients.

What Is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder. People living with epilepsy experience seizures with little warning. Not only is this condition disruptive to a person’s quality of life, it also causes injury. Since seizures are muscular contractions, people can fall or hurt themselves.

Therefore, the goal of treatment is to reduce the number of seizures people experience. In this way, they can live a safer life.

There are medications that treat epilepsy but effectiveness varies. In the study from Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Lennox-Gastaut condition was studied specifically. The current medications available don’t always work on LGS.

Lennox-Gastaut Epilepsy

Lennox-Gastaut Epilepsy causes several types of seizures. Those with LGS can have tonic (stiffening) and atonic (drop) seizures. They may also experience impared intellectual development.

This type of epilepsy is difficult to treat. In the study, for instance, the subjects were on three seizure medications and had tried six additional types in the past.

What Is Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol or CBD is a compound in cannabis that affects the body but does not get you high. Because of this, CBD is the leading cannabinoid in medical treatment right now.

Most cannabis contains CBD just like THC. In fact, there are over 100 active cannabinoids in marijuana in total. While THC creates cognitive effects, CBD bonds to different receptors in the brain. Therefore, it produces effects like pain relief and mood stabilization.

Legalization And Safety

Patients need continued study into these areas to eventually push legalization. In some areas of the world, patients have no choice but to purchase the medicine they need illicitly. This exposes them to safety risks since the product available is not regulated.

Hopefully, the news regarding marijuana and epilepsy continues to shine a positive light on this powerful plant.
